The fast of Tammuz occurs forty days after Shavu’ot to mark the day Moses descended from Mount Sinai, saw the golden calf, and broke the tablets. The fast of Tammuz is mentioned in the book of Zechariah as “the fast of the fourth month.” Judaism also associates the fast of the Tammuz and the breaching of Jerusalem’s walls. Three weeks later, the fast of the ninth of Av marks the anniversary of the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple.
