Number 18 in the series Holy Epistle to the Hebrews

Are "dead works" the "works of the Law"? Does the book of Hebrews tell us to repent from Torah observance when it speaks of "repentance from dead works."

What are the basic teachings of Messiah mentioned in Hebrews 6:1-3? Discover the meaning of repentance from dead works in this eighteenth installment of sermons on the epistle to the Hebrews.

Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits. (Hebrews 6:1-3)

Was Paul a  Lone Ranger and John Wayne type of apostle who heard directly from God, or did he honor higher authorities? In this episode, Paul goes up to Jerusalem to submit his gospel of Gentile inclusion to the authority of the apostles, fearing that he may have been running his race in vain.

"I set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure that I was not running or had run in vain." (Galatians 2:2)

How can we worship God without the sacrifices? The epistle of the Hebrews points us to the text of Hosea 14:2 to answer this question, employing the same proof text and arriving at nearly the same conclusion that the sages of Yavneh offered after the destruction of the Temple. That prescient message anticipated the coming exile and offered Israel a survival guide for the long years ahead without sacrifice, without priest, and without temple.

The city of Pergamum was one of the most famous places in the Roman world. In addition to a spas, hospitals, and a healing center there, the city boasted an enormous altar to the god Zeus. The story of Satan's throne in Pergamum and the martyr Antipas has a frightening corrolary in the modern world. Listen to a teaching on Revelation 2:13 to discover the meaning behind these cryptic references:

I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is; and you hold fast My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. (Revelation 2:13)

"Every generation in which the Temple is not rebuilt, is considered guilty of its destruction." Our Master knew that baseless hatred was the sin which was going to cause his generation to forfeit the redemption and go into exile. Therefore he called upon his generation to repent, and by repent, he meant, "Love God," and "Love one another." Love is at the center of his Gospel message.

Why was the second Temple destroyed at a time when people occupied themselves with the study of Torah, the observance of the commandments, and the practice of charity? Because baseless hatred prevailed within them. (b.Yoma 9b)

Number 25 in the series Shabbat beShabbato

It's more than just a greeting. When we say "Shabbat Shalom," we are actually conferring a blessing for peace upon one another. This audio teaching, tangentially related to parashat Tzav, explores the concept of the Sabbath peace with reference to Yeshua's instructions:

When you come to the house, ask of it’s shalom. It will be that if the house is worthy, your shalom will come upon it, and if it is not worthy, your shalom will return to you. (Matthew 10:12)
